Maine Sail Freight: Cargo and Farms

For the first time in over 100 years, agricultural freight has been transported by sail from Maine farms into Boston Harbor. Maine Sail Freight is both an art installation and a platform for an important historical discussion about trade and how a look into the past might give us a glimpse into the future of trade and how it might affect fishermen as well as farmers in the region. Maine Sail Freight was created by The Greenhorns, a non-profit young farmer advocacy group whose aim is to promote, support and recruit people to agrarian life. My assignment spanned about two weeks and led me to thirteen locations including several farms, a food distribution hub, and oyster farm, various docks and marinas as well as all the community events that supported the project. One of the greatest things about working on this project, was how intimate the interactions with people were, albeit brief at times. Being a farmer myself, provided a common thread, allowing for a closer look at the subjects.
